How it is done

The test is a very simple procedure in which the medical practitioner or gynecologist scrapes some cells from the outer opening of the cervix (cervical epithelium) of the uterus by using a sterile cytology brush/spatula provided and smears them on slides, fixes them and then sends them to the laboratory for evaluation. These are then examined under microscope to look for abnormalities, if any.

Pap smear analysis and reporting is based on Bethesda classification System, developed at the NIH, in Bethesda, Maryland.

The test is done to interpret atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, low-grade squamous intra epithelial lesion (early stage), high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion and carcinoma cervix; (squamous cell or adenocarcinoma).
