Hexylresorcinol
White or almost white needles, crystalline powder, plates, or
plate aggregates composed of needle masses with a pungent
odour. It acquires a brownish-pink tint on exposure to light
and air. M.p. 62Β° to 68Β°. Very slightly soluble in water: freely
soluble in alcohol, in chlorofonn. in ether, in glycerol, and in
fixed oils: practically insoluble in petroleum spirit. Store in
airtight containers. Protect from light. Incompatible with al-
kalis and oxidising agents.
Hexylresorcinol is a phenolic antiseptic which it used topical-
ly for the treatment of minor infections of the skin and mu-
cous membranes. It is also used in vaginal spermicidal
preparations.
High concentrations of hexylresorcinol are irritant and corro-
sive to skin and mucous membranes. Alcoholic solutions are
vesicant.
It was formerly used as an anthelmintic.
