Ambroxol is the metabolite of bromhexine and has similar actions and uses. The daily doses are 30-120 mg in divided doses and can be given orally, rectally or by injection. It can cause hypersensitivity reaction(contact dermatitis)in few.
Ambroxol promotes mucolysis and mucokinesis by which it helps in bringing out the sputum and helping in the ultimate recovery of the patient. It also facilitates opening of the eustacian tube and helps proper epithelial regeneration. It also promotes surfactant synthesis thus lowering the surface-tension in the respiratory channels and eustachian tube which helps in clearing of the secretions from the respiratory passages and eustachian tube.
The usual dose in adults is 30 mg tds and in children 9 mg qid.
It has some uricosuric action and the effective dose is 250 mg-500 mg daily in two divided doses.
