Mercuric Chloride
A heavy, colourless or white, crystalline powder or crystalline
masses. Soluble I in 15 of water, I in 3 of alcohol, I in 25 of
ether, and I in 15 of glycerol. A solution in water is acid to
litmus. Protect from light.
The use of mercuric chloride as an antibacterial substance is
limited by its toxicity, its precipitating action on proteins,
its
irritant action on raw surfaces, its corrosive action on metals.
and by the fact that its activity is greatly reduced in the pres-
ence of excreta or body fluids.
