Phthalyl sulphathiazole
White or yellowish-white Crystalline powder.
Practically Insoluble in water and in ether: slightly soluble in
alcohol and in acetone; freely soluble in dimethylformamide.
Protect from light.
Phthalylsulphathiazole is a sulphonamide with properties
similar to those of sulphamethoxazole . It is poorly ab-
sorbed, about 95% remaining in the intestine and only about
5% being slowly hydrolysed to sulphathiazole and absorbed.
It is given for its antibacterial action in the gastro-intestinal
tract, in combination with other antibacterials. for the treat-
ment of infections and for bowel decontamination before sur-
gery.
