Sulphathiazole
A white or yellowish-white, almost odourless, crystalline
powder.
Practically insoluble or very slightly soluble in water: slight-
ly soluble in alcohol: soluble in acetone: practically insoluble
in dichloromethane and in ether: dissolves in dilute mineral
acids and solutions of alkali hydroxides. Protect from light.
Sulphathiazole is a short-acting sulphonamide with proper-
ties similar to those of sulphamethoxazole . It is now
rarely used systemically due to its toxicity.
Sulphathiazole is used with other sulphonamides, usually sul-
fabenzamide and sulphacetamide, in preparations for the top-
ical treatment of vaginal infections and is also applied in
combination with other drugs in the treatment of skin infec-
tions.
Sulphathiazole sodium has been applied topically with other
drugs in the treatment of eye infections.
