Cyclopenthiazide
A white, odourless or almost odourless powder. Practically
insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol and in acetone: very
slightly soluble in ether; practically insoluble in chloroform.
Cyclopenthiazide is a thiazide diuretic with properties similar
to those of hydrochlorothiazide . It is used for oedema,
including that associated with heart failure , and for
hypertension .
Diuresis is induced in I to 3 hours, reaches a maximum in 4
to 8 hours, and lasts up to about 12 hours.
In the treatment of oedema the usual initial dose is 0.25 to
0.5 mg daily by mouth: up to I mg daily may be given in heart
failure. The dose should be reduced to the lowest effective
dose for maintenance: 0.5 mg on alternate days may be ade-
quate. In the treatment of hypertension the usual dose is 0.25
to 0.5 mg daily either alone, or in conjunction with other an-
tihypertensives. The maximum effective daily dose of cy-
clopenthiazide has been reported to be 1.5 mg, and to be
rarely required.
In susceptible patients potassium supplements or a potassi-
um-sparing diuretic may be necessary, but see hydrochloro-
thiazide.
