Aldosterone
Adverse Effects
Aldosterone has very pronounced mineralocorticoid actions
and little effect on carbohydrate metabolism. It may therefore
exhibit the mineralocorticoid adverse effects described for the
corticosteroids in general, like fludrocortisone .
Uses and Administration
Aldosterone is the main mineralocorticoid secreted
by the adrenal cortex. It has no significant glucocorticoid
(anti-inflammatory) properties.
Aldosterone has been given by intramuscular or intravenous
injection, in association with a glucocorticoid, in the treat-
ment of primary adrenocortical insufficiency but
synthetic mineralocorticoids such as fludrocortisone,
which can be given by mouth, are usually preferred.
It is also used as the sodium succinate.
