BUTOFORME
A white colorless, crystalline powder, soluble 1 in 7000 of water; soluble in
alcohol, in ether, in chloroform, in fixed oils and in dilute acids. It slowly
hydrolyses when boiled with water.
It is a para-aminobenzoic acid ester and is a local anaesthetic that has been used
for surface anaesthesia of the skin and mucus membrane. It has also been used for
relief of pain and pruritus associated with anorectal disorders.
