Choline Salicylate
Choline salicylate 1 g is approximately equivalent to 750 mg
of aspirin. Choline Salicylate Solution (BP 1998) is an aque-
ous solution containing 47.5 to 52.5% of choline salicylate. It
is a clear colourless liquid. It may contain a suitable antimi-
crobial preservative.
Uses and Administration
Choline salicylate is a salicylic acid derivative see Aspirin ,
used in the treatment of pain and fever, and in the man-
agement of rheumatic disorders. It is given by mouth in doses
of 435 to 870 mg every four hours as necessary for pain and
fever, and in doses of 4.8 to 7.2 g daily in divided doses for
rheumatic disorders.
Choline salicylate is also used as a local analgesic. Solutions
containing up to 20% choline salicylate are used in ear disor-
ders such as the relief of pain in otitis media and extema hut
are considered to he of doubtful value; they are also used to
soften car wax as an aid to removal . An 8.7% gel
is used for lesions of the mouth . Choline salicylate
is also applied topically in a rubefacient preparation in a con-
centration of 3.9% for the relief of muscular and rheumatic
pain.
Choline salicylate is also given in the form of choline magne-
sium trisalicylate .
Adverse effects. There has been a report of a 21-month
old boy who developed salicylate poisoning after his mother
had rubbed the contents of 3 tubes of 'Bonjela' teething oint-
ment (containing a total of 2.61 g of choline salicylate) on his
gums over 48 hours.
