Clopamide
Clopamide is a diuretic with properties similar to those of the
thiazide diuretics (see Hydrochlorothiazide) even
though it does not contain a thiazide ring system. It is used for
oedema, including that associated with heart failure ,
and for hypertension .
Diuresis is initiated in 1 to 2 hours, reaches a maximum in
about 3 to 6 hours, and lasts for up to 24 hours.
In the treatment of oedema the usual dose is 10 to 40 mg daily
by mouth: frequency may be reduced for maintenance. The
usual dose in the treatment of hypertension is 5 to 10 mg dai-
ly, either alone, or in conjunction with other antihyperten-
sives.
In susceptible patients potassium supplements or a potassi-
um-sparing diuretic may be necessary.
