Dimenhydrinate
DESCRIPTION:
Dimenhydrinate is the chlorotheophylline salt of the antihistaminic agent
diphenhydramine. Dimenhydrinate contains not less than 53% and not more than 56%
of diphenhydramine, and not less than 44% and not more than 47% of 8-
chlorotheophylline, calculated on the dried basis.
INDICATIONS AND USAGE:
For the prevention and treatment of the nausea, vomiting, or dizziness
associated with motion sickness.
ACTIONS/CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY:
While the precise mode of action of dimenhydrinate is not known, it is thought
to have a depressant action on hyperstimulated labyrinthine function.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
DIRECTIONS:
DRAMAMINE Tablets: To prevent motion sickness, the first
dose should be taken one half to one hour before starting activity.
ADULTS: 1 to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours
or as directed by a doctor.
CHILDREN 6 TO UNDER 12: 1/2 to 1 tablet every 6 to 8 hours, not to exceed 3
tablets in 24 hours or as directed by a doctor.
CHILDREN 2 to UNDER 6: 1/4 to 1/2 tablet every 6 to 8 hours not to exceed 1 1/2
tablets in 24 hours or as directed by a doctor.
Children may also be given DRAMAMINE Cherry Flavored Liquid in accordance with
directions for use.
DRAMAMINE Children's: To prevent motion sickness, the first dose should be taken
one half to one hour before starting activity. CHILDREN 2 TO UNDER 6: 1 to 2
teaspoonfuls every 6 to 8 hours not to exceed 6 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours or as
directed by a doctor. Use of a measuring device is recommended for all liquid
medication. CHILDREN 6 TO UNDER 12: 2 to 4 teaspoonfuls every 6 to 8 hours, not
to exceed 12 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours or as directed by a doctor. CHILDREN 12
YEARS OR OLDER: 4 to 8 teaspoons (5 mL per teaspoonful) every 4 to 6 hours, not
to exceed 32 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours or as directed by a doctor.
WARNINGS:
Do not take this product, unless directed by a doctor, if you have a breathing
problem such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, or if you have glaucoma or
difficulty in urination due to enlargement of the prostate gland. Do not give to
children under 2 years of age unless directed by a doctor. May cause marked
drowsiness; alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers may increase the drowsiness
effect. Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this product. Do not take this
product if you are taking sedatives or tranquilizers, without first consulting
your doctor. Use caution when driving a motor vehicle or operating machinery.
Not for frequent or prolonged use except on advice of a doctor. Do not exceed
recommended dosage. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In
case of accidental overdose, seek professional assistance or contact a poison
control center immediately. As with any drug, if you are pregnant or nursing a
baby, seek the advice of a health professional before using this product.
