Dimethindene Maleate
Dimethindene maleate, an alkylamine derivative, is a sedating
antihistamine; it is mildly sedative and is reported to have
mast-cell stabilising properties. It is used for the symptomatic
relief of allergic conditions including urticaria and angioede-
ma, rhinitis and in pruritic skin disorders. It is also used in
compound preparations for the symptomatic treatment of coughs
and the common cold.
Dimethindene maleate is given by mouth in a dose of I to
2 mg three times daily; modified-release preparations for
once or twice daily administration are also available. It may
also be given by the intravenous route. Dimethindene maleate
is applied topically as a 0.1% gel. although as with any anti-
histamine there is a risk of sensitization. It is used in a
strength of 0.025% in compound nasal preparations.
